KRISTINA BERNING develops her sculptures in a work process that deliberately remains uncontrollable at significant points, creating unfamiliar forms and connections. The artist examines the spatial dimensions of the material, she hollows it out, saws it in half, combines it anew, puts its stability to the test. In doing so, she addresses the basic questions of sculpture, such as the relationship between figure and pedestal or mass and volume. The sculptures display a high degree of anthropomorphic and biomorphic traits, each sculpture is individual and seems to have its own character. This impression is created by the unity of the form, the idiosyncratic statics and movements within the sculpture that are reminiscent of human gestures. The exhibition "Portrait of a Sculpture" addresses this interplay, which goes beyond abstraction without leaving it. The artist creates a presentation for this exhibition in which space, sculpture and viewer interact with each other.
In 2018 Berning already had a solo presentation at the Museum Folkwang, Essen. As of March 23, Galerie Löhrl will be showing a solo exhibition by the artist.
